Training in a Gi versus training No-Gi is like the difference between playing a high stakes game of chess and a frantic game of rugby. Both happen on the same mats, but the way you move and the way you think have to change the second you swap that heavy cotton jacket for a slick rash guard.

When you are wearing the Gi at the Frisco academy, the first thing you feel is the friction. Everything is slower and more deliberate. Because your opponent can grab your collar, your sleeves, or your pants, you are constantly fighting against their grips. It can be incredibly frustrating at first because it feels like someone is always holding you back. However, that’s exactly where the magic happens. You learn to use those same grips to create leverage that feels like magic. A smaller person in a Gi can use a lapel to tie up a much stronger opponent, making them feel like they are trapped in a spider web. It is very technical, very patient, and it rewards the person who understands how to use a piece of clothing as a weapon.

 

The No-Gi sessions are a completely different animal. Without those grips, the friction disappears. Suddenly, everything is fast and slippery. You can’t just hold onto someone’s sleeve to stop them from moving; you have to use underhooks, overhooks, and head control. It’s a lot more athletic and leans heavily on wrestling and explosive movement. If you make a mistake in No-Gi, you can often scramble out of it because there isn’t a collar grip keeping you pinned down. This makes it a great workout for your heart rate, but it also means you have to be much more precise with your body positioning. You can’t rely on the “handles” of the Gi to keep someone in place.

 

In Frisco, the culture is really about being a complete martial artist, which means doing both. Training in the Gi builds your technical defense and your patience because you can’t just “explode” out of every bad spot. It forces you to find the technical escape. Then, when you take the Gi off, you find that your hips are faster and your awareness is sharper.
